Back to School Supplies for Kids

Shepherd of The Hills, a cooperative ministry of the Northeastern Iowa Synod, Conference nine congregations, provides new school supplies to children from families unable to purchase them.  Supplies are donated by area churches and organizations.  Referrals by the pastor are needed to receive supplies.  For more  information please contact the church office at 563-252-2355 or Shepherd of the Hills directly at 563-783-2409.

Clothing Center

The Clothing Center located at Shepherd of The Hills, a cooperative ministry of the Northeastern Iowa Synod  Conference (nine congregations), has been in operation since 1985.  An average of 30 families are served per month with free clothing and household items.  Clothing is available free of charge with a referral and to others for a suggested donation of $1.00 per item. College Care Packages

College care packages are sent out every year to members of our church who are away at college.  These care packages lets you know that we are still thinking about you even when you are far away from us and from you home.  If you will be (or currently) away from home attending any college or university, please email our church secretary or call 563-252-2355 so that we can be sure to include in you. 

College Scholarships—EPIC

EPIC (Educational Partners in Covenant) is a matching grant program that began in 1983 as a cooperative venture between Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) congregations in Iowa and their colleges: Grand View, Luther, and Wartburg.  It's a means of encouraging congregations to financially support their students who attend one of the three Iowa institutions.  Grand View matches up to $500 per school year.  Please email our church secretary to let us know if you are a member and plan on attending one of these three colleges.

 

Community Resource Guide for Howard, Allamekee, Winneshiek and Clayton Counties

Community Circle of Care is a collaboration among the Iowa Department of Human Services, Iowa Child Health Specialty Clinics, the Center for Disabilities and Development and other community partners.  If you are looking for a resource guide and you live in one of these four counties please visit their website by clicking here. 
 

Crisis Fund

The Crisis fund was established in 1987.  Contributions have been received from congregations, individual WELCA groups, area businesses and grants.  We provide emergency help to families who have been referred to us with housing,  utility or fuel bills. We serve over 70 families a year.  For more information please call Shepherd of the Hills at (563)783-2409.

Delivering Communion to the Homebound

If you are homebound (either short- or long-term) and are unable to attend worship, you may request to be put on our Home Communion list.  Once a month the Pastor or lay communion servers will bring you Holy Communion.  Please email our church secretary or call 563-252-2355 to let us know that you desire home Communion.

Food Pantry

The Northeast Iowa Mobile Food Pantry comes to our community once a month and sets up a food pantry in the basement of St. John’s Lutheran church.  Anyone who has need for a supplement to their grocery bill is welcome to   participate.  The only information collected will be a name and phone number in case of a product recall.  Your information will not be used for any other purpose.  Please see the current St. John's calendar for dates and times.
 

Food Shelf

The Clayton County Food Shelf is located at 100 West Hill Street, St. Olaf, Iowa and provides supplemental food for those in need.  Families must meet income guidelines and have a referral from one of a number of social service referral agencies (e.g., Community Action, Dept of Human Services, Early Headstart, Family Resource Center, HAWC Partnership for Children).   Approved families may visit the food shelf once every three months.  Please contact your county social worker to get a referral.  If you don't know who to contact, call the Clayton County General Relief Office at 563-245-1885.
 

Friendly Visits

Several of our members offer to do friendly visits to homebound or ill members of our congregation.  If you would like a friendly visit please contact If you would like a friendly visit from one of our members please email our church secretary or call 563-252-2355.

Holiday Shop

The Holiday Shop serves about 151 families each year.  Thanks to donations of new toys, clothing and household items, each family that is referred “shops” for their Christmas gifts.  The donations are displayed like a retail store and a parent chooses gifts for their family.  Each parent has a volunteer to help them “shop”  for gifts.  For more information, please call Shepherd of the Hills at (563)783-2409.
 

 Stephen Ministers

St. John’s has a very dedicated Stephen Ministers program offering confidential, same-gender, one-on-one Christian care-giving.  Stephen Ministers are formally trained lay people who are there as long as you need someone to talk to.  If you are dealing with a loss or crisis, and do not want to face it alone, you might want  to consider asking for assistance of a Stephen Minister.  This service is completely confidential.  ore information about the Stephen Ministry program is available on our Stephen Minister page. 

 Thanksgiving Dinner

Each year, members of St. John’s cook and serve a traditional Thanksgiving dinner (with all the trimmings) for members of our community who otherwise would not have the opportunity to celebrate Thanksgiving with others.  We   typically serve about 70 each year.  You need to make reservations ahead of time, so please email the church secretary or call (563)252-2355 to make your reservations (beginning the first week of November). 

Transitional Housing for Victims of Domestic Violence or Sexual Abuse

Helping Services for Northeast Iowa offers transitional housing for survivors of sexual or domestic abuse.  They also provide emergency and advocacy services to victims and survivors.  Free or affordable transitional housing may be provided and is meant to provide a temporary residence for a limited period of time until more permanent housing can be found or afforded.  If you need assistance please call the Victims of Domestic Violence or Sexual Abuse Crisis Line at 1-800-383-2988.

Transportation to/from church

If you would like to attend worship on Saturday night or Sunday morning, but are unable to secure reliable transportation, please call the church office at (563)252-2355 no later than noon on Friday preceding the date you would like to worship with us.  Our shuttle service will pick you up before service and return you to your home.   Volunteers may use our van or their personal vehicle depending on your situation.
